The ‘Sole di Capri’ scent is redolent of high summer and long lazy days spent on the sun-drenched island. The intense southern Italian sunshine warms terracotta terraces, their sun-baked, heady dry scent mixing with the sea air and the surrounding citrus trees growing among white-walled houses. The ‘Sole di Capri’ design is one of Fornasetti's most cherished and enduring patterns.
Piero Fornasetti always had a great passion for Capri and created this iconic Fornasetti décor from this imagination, in advance of ever visiting the legendary island. Piero took the family to Capri for holidays and during the 1960s he also opened an ephemeral Fornasetti store there. Piero first used this décor on wastepaper baskets and on an umbrella stands; Barnaba has made further use it for several other objects such as fabrics, scarves, bags, ties and porcelains. The combination of the personified sunshine and the stylized architecture (both Fornasetti archetypes)create a distinctive design. The colour combination of marigold yellow and royal blue is also quite unique in context of Fornasetti's work.
